Editing + Design
As a new Highlander editor, design and editing are important parts of the process, both in the magazine and online. When designing spreads for the magazine or even infographics, I always try to remember to focus on only a few colors, bigger pictures and fewer words, and important design elements rather than just decorations.
The Process
An example of this editing and design process is the first practice spread I created for the Highlander Magazine. At the top is the first spread I created, then we had a circle edit, where critiques were given and I applied this advice to improve the spread.
Some of the critiques I was given included that the image was too small and the snowflakes seemed more like decoration than helpful design elements. Throughout the design process, I've learned to start thinking more about whether the elements I'm creating are additive or not. I used these critiques to redesign the spread, with a much bigger image that grabs the reader's attention, so the snowflakes are not needed.
